Dandelion Wine at WGT 2008, Europe/Japan tour and Australian shows…

January 29, 2008

Dandelion Wine have just been confirmed for a repeat appearance at Wave Gotik Treffen in Leipzig, Germany, the world’s largest festival of dark alternative music. We will be playing two shows at Heidnisches’ Dorf. Further details to be announced, but in the meantime you can see photos from our 2007 WGT performance here.

Full tour dates will be added to the site soon,  but so far we can say that we will be playing in Japan, Germany, Switzerland, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Portugal and the UK. Stay tuned for details or sign up to our mailing list to find out more! (be sure to tell us what country you are in)

The other exciting news is that for the upcoming Europe/Japan Tour in April, May and June we will be joined by a new touring member - we are pleased to announce that Kirstin Honey will be accompanying us on keyboards, vocal harmonies, electronics and maybe even some accordion. As well as being a former member of the spectacular Geelong based
experimental band Seascapes Of The Interior, Kirstin is also a solo artist in her own right - keep your ears out for her new solo album that will be coming soon!

We also have some Australian shows in Jan, Feb and March:
Jan 31 - Melbourne - East Brunswick Club (Three To A Room theatre company benefit)
Feb 9 -  Melbourne - Weekender @ Ding Dong (with Winterpark and Lunar Module)
Feb 16 - Melbourne - Barbukka (with State of Flux, Geamala and others)
March 15 - Adelaide Hills - “Summer Of Love” (Adelaide Fringe Festival)

We are currently  hard at work on our new album - our third full length album and second on Ars Musica Diffundére/Black Rain

QLD, NSW & SA shows… and email is back!

October 26, 2007

First off, the email glitch that was bedevilling us is fixed, so anyone who has sent us anything and not heard back (especially between Oct 1 & Oct 10) please send it agan! Thanks…

In more exciting news we have three shows around Australia coming up in the coming weeks:
Nov 9 in the glorious surrounds of the Globe Theatre, Brisbane
Nov 10 with a spectacular hybrid electronic lineup at Vic On The Park, Sydney
Dec 16 with friends and label mates Brillig at the Grace Emily, Adelaide

Our last Melbourne show was at the beautiful old converted church Wesley Anne, where we joined by Melisa Collins (violin), Pete McKeown (Fender VI) and Megan Price (backing vocals) and where singer Naomi’s voice tripped the Decibel Meter and left the band with no PA or sound a whole 16 bars away from the end of their last song - we couldn’t have planned it better if we tried! We hope to do another Melbourne show with these three fabulous guests in the near future.

In other news we will be recording our new album in the coming months and are currently planning another tour of Europe and Japan for April/May next year… see you soon!

Dandelion Wine Melbourne and Sydney shows!

July 30, 2007

Dandelion Wine have recently returned from a three-month tour of Europe and Japan and are about to do their first Australian shows since the tour.

For our first Australian show back, we will be supporting German/Canadian synthpop legends Psyche at the Evelyn Hotel in Melbourne on Friday August 10. This show will feature tracks from our forthcoming “Selected Anachronisms” EP, so expect one of our more upbeat and danceable sets. Opening the night will be fellow Melbournians Schadenfreude, making it one hell of a lineup!
Head over to the shows page for more details and to buy tickets online (cheaper!)

Next, we will be heading to Sydney for the Under The Blue Moon Festival on Saturday September 1. This will be a bit of a special show : we will be playing a one off show in a 19th century Church in Enmore and will be joined by guest violinist Melisa Collins. We will be using the widest array of instruments we have used outside of Melbourne, so expect lots of strings!

In other news, since our return home we have been working on our new EP - recording is almost finished and release dates for both Australia and Europe should be announced soon. And we are still wading through tour photos to decide which ones to put on the site…

The making of ~An Inexact Science~

August 17, 2006

(The absurd and true details)

~An Inexact Science~ had a couple of false starts…

Naomi and Nicholas returned from their first European tour in December 2002 with the intention of starting work on a new album.

However, they then received an invitation to play at the 10th Annual Romanian Festival of Music in Bucharest so they embarked on another tour of Europe in May 2003.

When Naomi, Nicholas and Steve returned to Australia they set about recording the album, beginning with the song ‘Fence’ (a live favourite) using a PC and an old Tascam DAT machine that was used for A/D conversion. Several IT savvy friends were called in to fix ongoing problems but eventually the old beast imploded and refused to do anything except the Blue Screen Of Death.

After much research and to-ing and fro-ing, Nicholas became the proud owner of a shiny new Mac and a MOTU interface. So in 2004 they set about recording the album in earnest. The first day that the new recording setup was patched in and turned on ‘For The Next Time The Whole World Floods With Tears’ was born.

Unlike ‘Tunguska Butterfly’, which was planned and mapped out before a note was recorded, the decision was made to just begin writing and recording without constraining the material.

After a while the album began to take shape and it became apparent which songs went together and which did not. ‘Fence’ and another couple of songs were omitted from the album (and may find themselves as b-sides in the near future).

It also became apparent that there were a few songs that didn’t fit ~An Inexact Science~ but seemed to have a life of their own. These more straight ahead medieval/electro/dance songs will be included on a forthcoming EP: ‘Selected Anachronisms’.

Along the way bassist Steve Wheeler (who was supposed to be filling temporarily but ended up playing with the band for two years) left the band to concentrate on his main focus, Heligoland. Shortly after, violinist Daniel Stefanski joined the band.

Daniel’s previous work included DeFlocKed, an avant garde string quartet featuring Helen Montford and Hope Cstouros (My Friend the Chocolate Cake, Cosmo Cosmolini). Daniel, a doctor as well as a gifted violinist, played a live show with Dandelion Wine at Cabaret Nocturne/Dream and recorded ‘Muscle Memory’ before leaving Australia to work in HIV research in Botswana.

Amongst the chaos, the band managed to instigate the Dark Exports tour of the East Coast of Australia with Ikon and Immaculata, fracture some ribs in a car accident while taking a German friend to see some marsupials at Healesville sanctuary, do a remix for The Crystaline Effect and Naomi even managed to have some wisdom teeth pulled out!
